Carsington was host to the Tempest & Flying Fifteen’s over the last
weekend in October for a combined Open Meeting that saw 36 boats (10
Tempest’s and 26 Flying/Fifteen’s) taking part in the 2-day event.
With the Tempest’s starting first followed 5 minutes later by the
F/Fifteens the large course set by our Race Officer Mr Henry Wright,
was much appreciated with so many keelboats competing for space.
On the Saturday, moderate SSW winds provided
good conditions for the 3-races held in the afternoon. The CSC
Tempest crew of Kim Dunstan & Phill Munton recovered from a 7th
place in the first race to record a 1st place in both the
next 2-races as the wind freshened.
Conditions on Sunday morning were very
different with strong and blustery winds from the South West blowing
force 6 and gusting 7, providing testing conditions for the first
race. Just prior to the start of the final race the wind dropped and
swung to the NW requiring the course to be quickly re-laid. As usual
with the Tempest’s the final places overall depended on the last
race, with Mike & Paul Adams from Ullswater YC leading the way in
the lighter wind conditions.
With 3 points separating the winner from the 2nd
& 3rd places who were both on equal 9 points after 5 races,
congratulations must go to the home crew of Kim Dunstan & Phill
Munton sailing “BLACK PIG” an old Mk1 boat (GBR1077) into 1st
place ahead of the brand new Mk2 boat of Mike & Paul Adams (GBR 1181
from UYC) in 2nd place and our own Jim Hart & Andy Banks
sailing a rather older Mk2 boat (GBR1121) into 3rd place
who lost out to Mike & Paul on count back.
Finally the Tempest fleet would like to thank
the Galley for yet another fine meal on the Saturday night, which
was enjoyed by some very tired sailors.
